Dismal River – Red Course

Dismal River – Red Course

Mullen, NE
2013

The second eighteen hole course for Dismal River Club, like the first, had to start and finish away from the clubhouse because of real estate and topography issues. What would distinguish it from the first course [and from its neighbor Sand Hills] was playing down to the edge of the river, but the topography was too steep to play or walk back up — so why not finish down there?

The open-jaw routing loops back to the starting point after eight holes in the higher dunes, then winds down to the river on the back nine. The dramatic par-4 18th finishes just steps from the river, where you can have a beer from a cooler and wait for your friends to finish behind you — or for someone to shuttle you back to the clubhouse, if you didn’t take a cart to play.
